Pine Mountain Lake Golf

Website: http://www.pinemountainlake.com

Course History:

This gorgeous course was designed by William Bell and has been rated as a top course by Golf Digest. One look and you’ll know why it has received so many accolades. The area has more than 300 days of sun every year and the course offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains. It’s a bit hilly, so we do recommend taking advantage of a cart.

What You Need to Know:

There is a dress code at Pine Mountain. Men are asked to wear collared shirts and appropriate trousers. Denim pants or shorts, swim trunks and sweats are not allowed. For women, tank tops are not allowed, and if a shirt is sleeveless, it must have 4″ wide straps. Denim pants and shorts are not allowed, but women may wear tee shirts on the course. In addition, short shorts are prohibited.

Tee times can be booked by calling the number listed above. We recommend reserving your slot a few days in advance since this is a popular course. Special guest rates are available, please check with the pro shop for more information.

Speaking of the pro shop it is very well stocked and the on site restaurant is fantastic. This is a terrific place to spend an afternoon. Lessons are available as well as special clinics throughout the year and the pros here are very helpful.

Playing Hints:

The holes here are very straightforward and the main issue are the trees. They line the fairways and in some cases, sit smack dab in the middle of the fairway. You’ll really need to work on having long accurate drives to get under par at this course. The level of play is suitable for pros or novices and although it can take some time to maste the course, it is well worth it.

Course History:

This is a beautiful course that is very well liked among the locals as well as travelers. It is considered to be one of the most well maintained courses in California and their unique blend of fairway grasses stay green nearly all year round. The course management really keeps everything running quite well here and the fairways are always well trimmed and sculpted. The greens are a bit fast here, but that just adds to the challenge.

What You Need to Know:

This course offers a unique feature with a special GPS unit that can assist you with yardage and more while you play. It’s a reasonably cheap addon and we highly recommend taking advantage of it. Tee times are available to be booked online or by phone. They run frequent drawings to win a free round of golf and specials are updated monthly on their site. We recommend checking back with them often to save off their already low cost green fees.

Lessons are available from the onsite pros and they offer several levels of instruction. The course is located near a special RV park and also sits near some prime real estate that has been integrated with the course. If you’re an avid golfer, this is a great place to set up a home.

The Putter’s Bistro and Pub is worth the trip alone and has become very popular even among those who do not golf. They frequently cater special events in the area and it is easy to see why. The food here is simply fantastic. The pro shop is very well stocked and has all the latest merchandise and brands.

The practice facility is top notch and features a driving range, putting green as well as an area to work on your chip shots. These facilities are also very well maintained and very popular. The course does offer special memberships if you are a frequent visitor and we recommend taking advantage of the savings.

Playing Hints:

This is a great course that is challenging enough for pros while being a good fit for novice players. The holes are pretty straightforward and the water hazards are challenging without being intimidating. You’ll need to work on your long drives to get the best score here, but don’t forget your green skills either. You’re definitely going to need them if you want to stay under par.

Black Lake Golf Course, Nipomo, CA

Website: http://www.blacklake.com/

Course History:

This course is actually three nine hole courses in one, so you’ll have the rate opportunity of being able to change up your game. This is one of the few 27 hole courses in the area and it’s well worth the drive. Most players prefer to start with their “Lakes and Canyons” layout and then move to the more difficult configurations after they get the hang of the course.

What You Need to Know:

Tee times can be registered online or by calling the number listed above. This is a busy course so we recommend reserving your time a few days in advance to make sure you get the slot you want. Numerous specials are posted on their website throughout the month, and you can save quite a bit on your green fees by taking advantage of them.

The bar and grill is open for lunch and also provides catering services. This is a great place to relax after a round of golf and the food is spectacular. The pro shop is well stocked and carries just about anything you could ever need. It’s a great place for gift shopping for the golfers on your list.

Numerous tournaments are held here throughout the year and since this is a championship course, play can be a little difficult at times. However, most players find that it is just challenging enough without being terribly intimidating. The course does stipulate that no ice chests are allowed on the course and any alcoholic beverages on the course should be purchased through the bar and grill.

They do not specify a dress code, but traditional golf attire is the norm for both men and women. We also recommend soft spikes. You can get the full list of course rules from the pro shop.

Playing Hints:

Although there are numerous water hazards and bunkers to deal with, most of the holes are pretty straightforward. The Oaks course has the straightest fairways but they are a bit long. The Canyon course is a little more complicated and more compact. It features some great water hazards and the play here is challenging. You’ll need to have a really good short game for many of these holes.

The Lakes course is challenging and although the holes are a bit short, you’ll have plenty of chances to practice your chip shots and putting. The greens here are a bit fast according to some players, so you’ll need to get some practice in ahead of time.

Manteca Park Golf Course is located in Manteca, CA

Phone: 209.825.2312

Website: http://www.ci.manteca.ca.us/golf

Course History:

When the course first opened in 1966, it was a simple nine hole executive course. However, the second nine were added soon after and it became an incredibly popular course. The founding fathers of Manteca built this course with their citizens in mind and the attention to detail shows. It is definitely a high class facility, even though it is a public course. The championship level of play is challenging enough to keep pros interested without overcoming the novice player.

What You Need to Know:

Tee times can be reserved by calling the pro-shop. This is a public course, but we still recommend wearing appropriate golfing attire. In addition to the course, you’ll also find a full service park, making it a fun getaway for the whole family. Tennis courts are also available to the public on site. The pro-shop is stocked with all of the latest gear and the snack bar is well stocked. This is definitely a family friendly course.

Numerous tournaments are hosted here all year round and it is a very popular destination. We recommend reserving your tee time well in advance to make sure you get the slot you want. Please note that members of the military get a special rate on all green fees. Overall, given the low price, great atmosphere and challenging play, this is one of the nicest courses in the area.

Playing Hints:

The first hole is a bit daunting at first glance, but if you’ve got a strong drive you can easily do this one in just three shots. Watch out for the green though, it’s very fast. The fourth hole is a bit tricky. You’ll be pointing to the right, but you’re going to want to shoot to the left. If you have a tendency to slice, be aware of the nearby water hazard.

The dogleg on the twelfth hole is a bit challenging for some. Aim to the right for a clear shot to the tee. You don’t want to hit this one too long or you’ll end up in the field. If you do, the course asks that you take an extra shot and that you do not go into the field to get your ball since it is private property. You’ll meet another dogleg on the last hole. For this one, try to keep as close to the center of the fairway by aiming a little left. From there, you’ll have a clear shot to the green.
