Tokatee Golf Course, McKenzie Bridge, OR

Website: http://www.tokatee.com/

Course History:

The name Tokatee means, “Place of Restful Beauty,” and there are few places on earth that embody this phrase as closely as this course does. This is a rare course that was inspired and built by the nearby residents and they shaped a course that has gone down in history as a favorite among pros and novices alike.

What You Need to Know:

You can register your tee time using their online system or by calling the number listed above. They do offer frequent specials on their website, and you can even get a free round of golf, so we highly recommend stopping by there first before you call.

This is a family run course and we found it to be very relaxed and laid back. You won’t have to worry too much about dress code here, but we still recommend a nice sleeved shirt and shorts. Denim is pretty much frowned on, even at public courses, so it’s best to leave that at home.

The Pro Shop is simply terrific and offers a wide selection, as well as a very cute little coffee shop, lessons and a whole lot more. The catering service onsite is terrific and we loved the box lunches you can take out on the course. If you prefer to eat in, they’ve got a great menu with traditional, good Old American food like hamburgers, hot dogs and everything else you’d expect from a great family place like this.

Playing Hints:

While this is a fun course, don’t let it fool you. It can get pretty difficult at times. However, even novices can master it with a little practice and pros find it still challenging enough to offer them a very good game.

The course layout is pretty straightforward, but accuracy is still key to getting par here. Watch out for the numerous bunkers that are filled with White Idaho sand - they are incredibly tricky. The fourteenth hole is one of the biggest challenges on the course. As you approach the green, make sure you don’t overhit the ball. There’s a big lake just waiting on the other side and it is notorious for pulling your ball right in.

Course History:

This is a private course that offers daily fee play and is a favorite among locals and travelers alike. Each year, the following events are hosted here: NCGA California State Amateur Qualifying Events, California Players Tour, Golf Channel Amatuer Tour, the Annual Outlaw Cup Championship (formerly Coombs Cup) and is the Home of the Save Mart Shootout. It is easy to see why this is such a popular destination. This is truly one of the nicest courses on the West Coast.

What You Need to Know:

You can register your tee time by calling the number listed above. Since this is a private course, traditional golf attire is necessary. No sleeveless shirts are allowed and no denim. The course does not state whether they prefer soft or metal spikes, but we recommend soft spikes just in case.

This course offers a very unique system called the ProShot Golf System. This gizmo is well worth the time it takes to get to this course. You’ll be able to use this to get exact information on the distance of your shots as well as customized tips to help you improve your game. The system is mounted on to your golf cart and can be used to determine how many yards you are from the hole, how to handle upcoming hazards and functions very much like a high tech caddy.

The onsite café offers breakfast and lunch and features a great mix of real ranch cooking. They also provide catering services and are well loved by the entire community.

Playing Hints:

Don’t let the virtual caddy fool you into think this is an easy course. It’s actually quite difficult in spots but always fun to play. You’ll need that system for many of these holes since they can be pretty tough. The first three holes may lull you into a sense of complacency, but the fourth hole will shake you up. The green is almost completely surrounded by a lake and you’ll really need to have an accurate shot to get it. We recommend a short second shot from the tee to get into a better position to land on the green.

The seventh hole features a dogleg with a lake tucked into the curve and around the green. You’ll want to stay to the right on this hole to have a clear shot to the green and to avoid the water. The 18th hole is a behemoth that can either save your score or ruin it. Work on an accurate tee shot to avoid the rough and try to stick to the middle of the fairway for the best chance at making par or a birdie.

Course History:

Tuscan Ridge Golf Course is a beautiful course that is off the beaten path near Chico, CA. This is truly a rare course and we were very happy to find it. Since it opened, it became an instant favorite of the locals and it’s easy to see why. This course offers a great challenging level of play and some of the best facilities we’ve seen in the area.

What You Need to Know:

Tuscan Ridge doesn’t specifically state that there is a dress code, but we do recommend standard golf attire. You can register your tee time by calling the number listed above. In addition to their usual pro shop gear, which is terrific by the way, they also offer some of the best club fitting and repair services we’ve ever seen. This is a great place to go if your clubs are getting a bit run down and you need them fixed properly.

The clubhouse is worth the trip alone and it is extremely relaxing. This was definitely one of the nicest rounds of golf we have played in years and we simply cannot say enough nice things about this incredible course.

Playing Hints:

The designer of this course was a master of optical illusions and the “risk reward” strategy. You’ll need to bring your best game here and chances are, you’ll want to keep coming back to perfect your own strategy. We found that the natural terrain was very challenging and there were times that we weren’t sure where the green was.

There are numerous hazards on the course that make it fun to play. One wrong move and you may find yourself in a small quarry. Accuracy is definitely key here and we highly recommend working on the art of the straight and powerful drive before you arrive. Watch out for the bunker on The Vineyard Hole. You may need a bulldozer to get out if you have the misfortune of landing in there.

Course History:

Washoe Golf Course is a public course that is extremely friendly and fun to play. No matter what your skill level is, you’ll feel right at home on this great course. It has much to offer, and the prices are truly remarkable. It has a rich history that dates back to the first World War, and it is one of the oldest courses in this area. It’s nickname is the “Shoe” and it has remained incredibly popular with residents and guests since the day it first opened. If you just want to play a simple round of golf in a great environment, this the perfect course.

What You Need to Know:

You can book your tee time by calling the number listed above. This course offers lessons as well as special Ladies and Mens groups that are very popular. The pro shop is surprisingly well stocked given the overall size of the course, and you’ll find pretty much everything you could ever need right there.

If you don’t have your own clubs, they do offer rentals at very good rates. Overall, this is one of the most economical courses in the area that still provides that great traditional golf experience. Odette’s restaurant, located on site is a legend and with good reason. You won’t find better food anywhere else in this area. We really can’t say enough nice things about this great course.

Playing Hints:

The front nine all play very straightforward. This isn’t the most challenging of courses, but it is a great place to really work on your game. Like most courses, accuracy really helps, but this one is a little more forgiving than others. The third hole is a deceptively easy Par Three, but it will take a few times of getting to know the course to par it.

One of our favorites holes on the course is the 18th, which is a very long par five. You’ll have plenty of chances to make up any slack on your score with this hole and you’ve got a great chance of making a birdie, even if you’re a novice.

Course History:

This is a truly great course that is actually two courses in one. You’ll have your pick of two, and the West Course is by far the most challenging. We’ll be focusing on this one for our review. The course is a bit tucked away, but easy enough to access from the Lake Tahoe area. However, there are quite a few construction projects in the works this year for this area, so you may want to call ahead to get a road report before you go. Overall, this is a course that is well worth the trip, fun to play and you’ll have a great time.

What You Need to Know:

You can book your tee time by calling the number above. This is a great classic style course that offers a championship level of play. We recommend wearing traditional golf attire while you’re here. It’s a very friendly course, but this is a championship level course and you should dress appropriately.

The staff at the pro shop is unbelievably helpful and you’ll find everything you could ever need for your game while you’re here. The grill is a terrific place to kick back after a hard game and they have some truly marvelous food here. You won’t mind making the trip once you bite into one of their entrees.

Playing Hints:

This is a course that requires a great deal of accuracy and patience. It is a lot of fun, but you will be working for that score. The worst part is the change of elevation and you’ll be hard pressed to see the greens at some points. It’s best to bring a cart since this is a very tough course.

You’ll also be dealing with several water hazards, but the worst is the ninth hole. The lake there is shaped like a boomerang, so you’ll deal with it first after your first shot and then again during your approach to the green. Stick to the right of the fairway for the best shot.

Course History:

This is a stunning course that first opened its doors in 1968, and has since gone on to receive numerous accolades and an ardent fan base. It was designed by George Fazio and contains a great mix of hazards and terrain that make it a challenging but fun course to play. The USGA holds several events here and the course also frequently hosts celebrity golfing events. The public is usually not allowed on the course to play, and we’ve noted below which dates are unavailable.

What You Need to Know:

You can book your tee time online or by phone and this is one of the few courses that will let you book six months in advance. Please note that singles cannot reserve a tee time but may play on standby notice. If you don’t call to cancel your tee time, the course will charge you for the full amount, so make sure that if you can’t make it that you do cancel with plenty of notice to avoid this.

This is a very nice course and we highly recommend wearing traditional golf attire. Their pro shop is literally one of the nicest throughout the area and you’ll find plenty of gifts or things for yourself. The Golf Bar and Deck is incredible and well worth the trip out. The food is just about perfect. Overall, this is a course that has everything required for a memorable and fun golf outing.

Playing Hints:

As we mentioned above, this is a challenging course, but novices shouldn’t feel too intimidated. The water hazards will require a bit of effort to surmount, but the key is definitely distance and accuracy. It’s a good idea to perfect the long tee shot before going to this course to increase your chances of staying under par.

The terrain is certainly not level and there may be times that one wrong shot will put you where it’s just about impossible to see the green. This is a challenging area for many players and requires a good iron game as well as being able to hit a long drive. The greens are fast and unpredictable, but this just makes it more fun. Chances are, you’ll want to keep coming back to try to master this course.

Course History:

This course was designed by Jim Summers and Sandy Tatum and quickly became a favorite of golfers from the entire bay area. The course is well suited to players of all levels and is challenging enough to give a pro a great round of golf.

What You Need to Know:

This is definitely a full service golf course and the practice facilities are unmatched. The grill is also top notch as well as the pro shop. You can really make a great afternoon of it here and have a lot of fun while you’re at it. The course is home to numerous events and tournaments throughout the year and it is easy to see why.

You can register your tee time by calling the number above or you can use their online registration system. We recommend checking their website often as they usually have specials or giveaways every month. It is a good idea to register your tee time around two weeks in advance since this is a popular course.

We recommend wearing traditional golf attire such as a collared shirt and slacks when golfing here. They do observe PGA rules so you’ll want to be on your best behavior at this course. We also recommend soft spikes so it’s a good idea to change out your metal ones before you arrive.

Playing Hints:

The main issue with this course for many players are the hidden water hazards. It’s difficult to know where they are until you are right on top of them so you will want to play with caution at least the first time around. This is a championship links course so expect to deal with sloping greens, changes in elevation in the fairways and numerous hazards along the way.

The only holes that do not have a water hazard are the seventh, ninth, third and seventeenth holes. That doesn’t mean they are easy however. Most have narrow fairways, so you’re going to want to avoid the rough at all costs. With most holes, your best bet is to really hit it off the tee as straight as possible. The one exception would be the fifth hole where you are going to want to hit it to the left to avoid the rough. The eighteenth hole also has a severe dog leg filled with rough, so it’s best to go as left as you can on this hole as well.

Sierra Meadows Golf Course, Ahwahnee, CA

Website: http://www.sierrameadows.com

Course History:

Sierra Meadows has long been considered one of the most beautiful golf courses in California and with good reason. The fairways are lined with enormous oaks and the overall feel is very tranquil. The course recently underwent a multimillion dollar makeover and the fairways and greens were all rebuilt. This course has a reputation of being suitable for novice players while still being challenging enough for professionals.

What You Need to Know:

You can book your tee time online or by calling the number above. They frequently run specials on their site so we recommend checking there before you book your time to take advantage of them. However, this is a very economical course even without discounts.

The pro shop is stocked incredibly well and features gifts and merchandise for all golfers. The on-site restaurant is one of the best in the area and is open for lunch every day. It is frequently booked for private events and they are known for their delicious soups and sandwiches.

Although the course does not specifically state that there is a dress code, we recommend traditional golf attire. It is also best to change out any metal spikes for soft ones, since most of the courses in this area do have a soft spike rule. Lessons are available from the resident pro and are reasonably priced.

Playing Hints:

This is a terrific course that offers enough of a challenge without being terribly intimidating. The first hole gets you started off right with a severe dogleg. We recommend keeping to the right. Watch out for their signature oak tree in the middle of the fairway at the curve.

The fifth hole is known as their signature hole and it is a challenging par three. You’ll be playing across the water so try to hit a long tee shot to make the green in one. However, be careful of the bunkers that surround the green.

The tenth hole will take a while to master. It has a slight dogleg, but danger is present on all sides. Go too far to the right and you’ll end up out of bounds. Too far to the left and you’ll end up in the creek. We recommend playing this one conservatively until you get the hang of it.

The sixteenth hole also features a hazard that runs the entire left side of the fairway. You’ll need to drive a little bit right of center to avoid it. Keep in mind that there are some severe bunkers around the green. It’s the perfect spot to work on your chip shots.

Course History:

This is a stunning course that is incredible to play. It is actually made up of three nine hole course and you can pick your own configuration. It’s almost impossible to get bored with this course and you’ll find plenty of opportunities to challenge yourself. Although the course can be difficult at times, it is not too much for a novice player to handle.

What You Need to Know:

You can book your tee time by calling the number above or they do have the option to book online. The staff here are incredibly friendly and the course is very well maintained. Although they don’t specifically state that there is a dress code, it is best to err on the side of caution and wear traditional golfing attire.

The pro shop is simply the best in the area and they also offer custom club fittings. If you’re new to golf or need some pointers, the pros are very helpful and the lessons are very beneficial. Numerous events are held throughout the year on the course and it has become a local favorite. It is a bit tucked away however, so we included some basic instructions on how to get there below.

Playing Hints:

Each of the three layouts will play very differently. The first, the Valley Course, is a very traditional course that has incredibly narrow fairways lined with trees. You’ll really need to work on your accuracy with this one. Even though the 7th hole is the shortest, it’s also the most difficult. It’s a 200 yard par 3, but you’ll need to avoid the bunkers on your approach. Try to be as accurate as possible since the 45 foot green can easily demolish your score.

The Oaks Course is a great place to start if you’re still working on accuracy. The fairways are a bit wider on this one and you’ll have more room for error. Once again, the hardest hole is the shortest. The eighth hole is a par 3 but it may take a few times around to get that score. You’ll be dealing with trees to the right and a lake to the left. Once you get past these, the sloping green is surrounded by tough bunkers.

The Lakes Course is the newest addition and offers a good balance between the other two courses. The fairways and greens have a bit of a roll to them, but they aren’t too much to handle with practice.

Course History:

This great little executive course was designed by Fred Bliss. It’s a par 31 that stretches out nicely giving you just enough room without being too daunting. This is a great course if you just want a quick round of golf.

What You Need to Know:

You can book your tee time by calling the pro shop. We recommend a few days ahead of time since this is a popular course. You’ll want to wear standard golf attire, but the course isn’t terribly stuffy about that. What this course is really known for are its practice facilities which are simply incredible.

They offer a swing recorder and the 52 stall driving range is fantastic. There is a reason that this facility is ranked in the top 100. They are currently adding new turf to the range and the expected renovations should be completed shortly. In addition to the range there is also a short game practice center.

The pro shop is very well stocked and offers plenty of gift ideas for every golfer. They offer custom fitting for clubs as well as the ability to order any line of clubs that you may be looking for. Hands down, this is definitely one of the best nine hole courses in the entire area and the staff is incredibly friendly. We highly recommend this course.

Playing Hints:

The first hole is very straightforward, if a bit long. You’ll really want to give this a hard shot off the tee if you want to birdie it. There is a slight slope to the green on this hole so putt with care.

The second hole looks easy at first, but watch out for the rough right off the tee. One bad swing and you can really ruin your score. By the time you get to the green you’ll want to keep an eye on the bunkers to the right. The third hole is even tougher with more rough to contend with. Give this one a very hard shot off the tee to clear the rough spots.

The fourth hole offers a great water hazard in front of the green. We recommend a nine iron for your second shot to make it to the green. The fifth hole can be described as hop scotch. You’ll have to make it across to the island fairways, cross a creek and then get across even more rough to reach the green. It can be done in two shots with the right strategy.

The problem repeats itself on the eighth hole where nothing but rough separates you from the green. Aim to the right to get to the first island fairway and then really give it a good shot to get on the green from there.
