Whitehawk Ranch Golf Club is located near Lake Tahoe, CA

Course History:
Dick Bailey designed this magnificent course that stretches out over nearly 7000 yards. It was carved into the Mohawk Valley and the natural terrain makes for a game that is challenging for all players but plenty of fun. Professionals may have a bit of an advantage, but this is certainly a course that is enjoyable for players of all skill levels.
What You Need to Know:
The staff at Whitehawk are incredibly friendly and the course is known as one of the nicest in the area. Tee times can be reserved by calling the number listed above. The prices are incredibly reasonable given the costs of most of the other courses in this area but they also have specials for residents. We recommend checking their website for specials before booking your time.
The fees include the use of a golf cart and we recommend taking them up on the offer. The terrain can be a bit challenging at times and it's nice to have the benefit of a cart at your disposal. They do ask that visitors refrain from bringing their own alcoholic beverages - but these can be purchased at the course.
There is a dress code for both men and women. Men are asked to wear collared shirts with sleeves and appropriate slacks. Shorts are allowed as long as they are knee length. Denim is allowed if it is in good shape and nicely pressed. Women must wear appropriate golfing shirts, and any skirts or shorts must be longer than mid-thigh.
Playing Hints:
Many of the fairways are sloped and it can be difficult to get a shot you're happy with on many holes. What seems like a great shot will be made a lot worse after the ball rolls down the hill. We recommend working on your long game as well as your accuracy to make the most of this course. When there is a slope, try to aim a little in the opposite direction so that you minimize the amount of roll.
The natural terrain is challenging and will require the use of all of your clubs. There are a few water hazards, but nothing that is terribly difficult to surmount. The bunkers however are quite challenging and they are sprinkled throughout the course. You'll want to do your best to avoid them since the sand is quite deep and nearly impossible to get out of.

August 1st, 2008 — Book Review, Dress code, Staying Healthy During Play
When it comes to playing golf, many of us wonder just how dangerous it is. Statistics have shown that heart attacks frequently occur on the course and countless people, including celebrities die every year. This book by Ed Palank seeks to remedy this problem and provide golfers with tips on how to play properly and stay healthy while out on the course.
One of the main issues with golf is that it is typically played in summer in very warm conditions. The sun is beating down on you and it is all too easy to get dehydrated and overheated. This book addresses ways that you can stay cool on the course and reduce the risks of dehydration. There are some very solid tips here that absolutely any golfer can put to immediate use. For example, sports drinks really don't do that much for you and water is truly the best medicine. Golfers should also avoid alcoholic beverages while playing, since these can also contribute to dehydration.
Whenever you combine physical stress with mental stress, you're bound to have a game that can result in some health issues. In addition to heart attacks, strokes are quite common on the links. Many attribute this to the frustration and anger that can build up while you're playing. The author provides the reader with some great tips on how to minimize this kind of stress while improving your game.
This is a sport that requires a lot of physical strength and endurance. Players should never attempt to overexert, especially if the conditions are particularly bad for that day. The author stresses knowing your own limits and finding ways to play smarter, not harder. For example, a cart may be necessary on very hot days to reduce the risks of heat stroke by walking around the course. The importance of proper clothing is also addressed, since this is another contributing factor to a lot of health problems that occur on the course. For example, it is important to wear light colors, especially during hot and sunny days, to avoid getting overheated.
The book also covers dealing with allergies and the small injuries that can occur while playing. Advice is offered for all types of players, including those with disabilities. This is truly a great read that is absolutely necessary for all players, regardless of how often they head out for a round. The book provides warning signs that can help you determine whether you're overexerting or in danger of falling prey to a healthy problem while you're playing or practicing.
We highly recommend this book to all golfers, especially those that play in hot climates. The advice here is sound and medically proven. In addition to all the health tips, the author also provides exercises that you can do at home to help improve your swing and the rest of your game. We found the book to be very well rounded, easy to read and incredibly useful.

Phone Number: (805) 343-1214

Website: http://www.blacklake.com/
Course History:
This course is actually three nine hole courses in one, so you'll have the rate opportunity of being able to change up your game. This is one of the few 27 hole courses in the area and it's well worth the drive. Most players prefer to start with their "Lakes and Canyons" layout and then move to the more difficult configurations after they get the hang of the course.
What You Need to Know:
Tee times can be registered online or by calling the number listed above. This is a busy course so we recommend reserving your time a few days in advance to make sure you get the slot you want. Numerous specials are posted on their website throughout the month, and you can save quite a bit on your green fees by taking advantage of them.
The bar and grill is open for lunch and also provides catering services. This is a great place to relax after a round of golf and the food is spectacular. The pro shop is well stocked and carries just about anything you could ever need. It's a great place for gift shopping for the golfers on your list.
Numerous tournaments are held here throughout the year and since this is a championship course, play can be a little difficult at times. However, most players find that it is just challenging enough without being terribly intimidating. The course does stipulate that no ice chests are allowed on the course and any alcoholic beverages on the course should be purchased through the bar and grill.
They do not specify a dress code, but traditional golf attire is the norm for both men and women. We also recommend soft spikes. You can get the full list of course rules from the pro shop.
Playing Hints:
Although there are numerous water hazards and bunkers to deal with, most of the holes are pretty straightforward. The Oaks course has the straightest fairways but they are a bit long. The Canyon course is a little more complicated and more compact. It features some great water hazards and the play here is challenging. You'll need to have a really good short game for many of these holes.
The Lakes course is challenging and although the holes are a bit short, you'll have plenty of chances to practice your chip shots and putting. The greens here are a bit fast according to some players, so you'll need to get some practice in ahead of time.
