Mare Island Golf Course
Mare Island Golf Course is located in: Vallejo, CA
Phone: (707) 562-4653
Website: http://www.mareislandgolfclub.com/
Course History:
This is the oldest golf course west of the Mississippi River and was opened in 1895. It first started out as a nine hole course and was later expanded. Numerous tournaments are played every year at this amazingly beautiful and historically rich course. During World War II the army took over the course and to this day you can still see some of their bunkers.
What You Need to Know:
The course does have a cancellation policy for tee-times. You must give them 24 hours notice or you will be charged the full green fee. They do have a dress code and all players must wear collared shirts. Please note that tank tops are not allowed and the course also has a soft spike policy. In addition, no glass containers are allowed on the course at any time.
All golfers must have their own clubs. Rentals are available. Absolutely no spectators are allowed on the course at any time. Tee times can be booked online or by calling ahead and are available up to 14 days in advance.
The Mare Island Café is open for all meals, including breakfast. You can get their menu from the website. Beer and liquor are served at the clubhouse.
Playing Hints:
The first four holes are pretty straightforward, but the only par five, hole five can be a bit more difficult. It’s best to try to power the ball as far as possible and then use a 3 or 5 wood to get on the green from there.
The eighth hole is definitely tricky and is cut in half by a large lake. Again, your best bet is to use your driver to get over it in one shot and then iron out the rest of the hole.
Although the fifteenth hole looks like an easy par three, you’ll have to be especially careful to avoid the bunkers on either side of the green.

What You Need to Know:
There is a dress code at this course. Collared shirts are required and no denim is allowed. Shorts are allowed but must be knee length. Lessons are available to all players from the pro staff. Please keep in mind that this is a no-metal spike course. The staff asks that you switch out your spikes before arriving.
You can reserve a tee time online or by calling the clubhouse. They offer several different packages for playing that we’ll list below. The golf shop stocks all the latest gear and apparel and The Grille offers lunch and breakfast everyday. You can visit their website to download the menus.
Playing Hints:
If you’re using the Palmer tees, prepare for a challenge on any hole on this course. If you’re new here, it’s best to start on the blue tees and work your way up to using the Palmer tees.
The first hole isn’t too intimidating, but watch out for hole two. It’s a long par five, but with the right approach, you can birdie or even eagle. Pros will find this hole relatively simple, but more challenging ones are to come.
The fifth hole is another killer that will require the right combination of woods and irons if you want to birdie. It’s not impossible to do well on this one but you will need a fair bit of practice to master it.
The sixteenth and eighteenth holes are nearly 600 yards if you are playing the Palmer tees and both offer quite a bit of a challenge. By this point, you may be pretty tired, so the best advice is to give it all you have to get a good first shot and then use your woods one more time to get a better layup to the green.
