Cherry Island Golf Course is located in: Elverta, CA
Phone: 916-991-7293

Website: http://www.empiregolf.com/empire/cherryisland
Course History:
Robert Muir Graves, one of the most celebrated course archtitects today designed this course in 1990. It has become an area favorite with most golfers and offers just the right level of challenging play for golfers of all skill levels. The course is lush and scenic and is a great place to relax and get away from it all. It is tucked away, so we included directions on how to get to the course below.
What You Need to Know:
This is truly a full service golf course with a great grill, pro shop and lessons. The practice facility is terrific and offers numerous opportunities to improve on your game. This is a public course but we still recommend wearing appropriate golf attire.
You can register your tee time by calling the number above, but you may want to check out their website as they post frequent specials to save on their already reasonable green fees.
Playing Hints:
Water hazards are plentiful here and there are a few that are quite tricky. The first hole is clear of these but the sharp dog leg will definitely test your skills. The third, fourth, sixth and seventh holes all feature large lakes, so you’ll want to try to be as accurate as possible on your tee shots.
The thirteenth hole is bisected by a creek, so you’ll need to watch your tee shot here. Some players may prefer to hit it short and then iron over the creek to be on the safe side. The eighteenth hole is no gimme and meanders along with plenty of rough patches to keep you guessing. This one will take some time to master, but you should be able to birdie it with practice. This is a long course so we really recommend making use of a cart unless you are in tip top shape.

June 9th, 2008 — CA, Dress code, Robert Muir Graves, Sonora, golf courses

Phone: (209) 532-1000
Website: http://www.mountainspringsgolf.com
Course History:
The renowned course designer Robert Muir Graves put together this championship level public course. Tucked into gold country and near the Sierra Nevadas, this incredible scenic course is every relaxing to play. The course first opened in 1994 and become an instant hit. Due to its popularity, we do recommend reserving your tee time well in advance. You can get a sneak peak of the course thanks to their live webcam.
What You Need to Know:
There is a dress code here for men, who must wear collared shirts. We also recommend proper slacks. The course does not specify any restrictions for women, but proper golf attire is the safest bet. You can register your tee time up to two weeks in advance by calling the pro-shop. While you cannot bring your own ice chest on the course, you can get one from the restaurant.
Please be advised that all players must have their own set of clubs. If you don’t have yours, you can rent a set. We’ve included their rates for this option below. The pro shop is incredibly well stocked and lessons are available at very good rates. The restaurant is a great place to unwind and overall, this is a very nice course.
Playing Hints:
This is a championship level course, but it is not terribly daunting for a novice player. Pros will find it just challenging enough and it will take a few passes to get it down.
The first hole is a dogleg left and you’ll want to keep to the right if you want to get a good score on this one. Don’t go too far right though, the water hazard on this hole runs the entire length of the fairway. The third hole is incredibly challenging and will require a bit of skill to master. It’s another dogleg, and you’re going to want to keep to the right to avoid the bunkers at the curve.
There’s no letting up on this course. The fourth hole is surrounded by two water hazards and bisected by a creek. We recommend a short shot off the tee, followed by an iron to get over the creek. From there, you’ll have a straight shot. The eleventh hole is another severe dogleg. Go a little left to get to the center of the fairway so you’ll have a clear shot to the green. The fourteenth hole is a real killer with a small dogleg left, then a dogleg right, followed by a green surrounded by water hazards. Take a short shot to layup your second one, and then use a three or five wood to go a little to the right to avoid the lake. From there, you can iron into the green.

Course History:
This is a sister course to the Diamond Oaks golf course located in the same city. Robert Muir Graves also designed this one and it first opened for business in 1995. It’s a little more difficult that Diamond Oaks and pros tend to prefer this course since it is a bit more challenging. That being said, the course is still friendly for players of all skill levels and novices should not have too much difficulty keeping up.
What You Need to Know:
You can register your tee time using their online registration system or by calling the number we have listed above. This is a popular course in the area since it is quite economical, so you may want to reserve your tee time by at least two weeks in advance. Check their website for more information on specials and on their passes which can make it even cheaper to play here.
Although this is a municipal course we still recommend using soft spikes and wearing appropriate golf attire. Denim is usually frowned upon as are cutoffs and tank tops. It’s best to wear a collared shirt and slacks just in case.
The course is set in a native wetland so it can be a bit challenging at times. However, after your round you can rest up in the terrific clubhouse or see what the well stocked pro shop has to offer. For the money, this is definitely one of the best courses in the bay area.
Playing Hints:
This is a championship level course so you’re going to want to bring your best game with you. There are numerous water hazards and bunkers on nearly every hole so accuracy is truly key.
The first hole has a sharp dog leg, but you’re really going to want to pay attention by the time you reach the fifth, eighth and ninth holes on this course. They all have some hefty lakes and the wrong shot can end up ruining your score. The ninth hole is truly a monster that dog legs left and then right. You’ll want to hit this one off the tee a little to the left so that you have a clear line of sight to the green. The green on the eighteenth hole is surrounded by bunkers and a water hazard but with practice you can easily master this one and even get a birdie.
