Sandpiper Golf Course, Santa Barbara, CA

Website: http://www.sandpipergolf.com

Course History:

This beautiful course was designed by William Bell and first opened to the public in 1972. It quickly became one of the most popular courses in Santa Barbara and has been a top rated course for many years. Most recently, Golf Digest named it one of the top twenty five golf courses in the United States.

The course stretches out over 7000 yards and has a rating of 74.5. This is a championship level course that has hosted many PGA and LPGA players but novices should not find it terribly intimidating.

What You Need to Know:

Tee times can be registered online or by calling the number listed above. Please note that this is a soft spike facility. All metal spikes must be changed out before arriving on the course. There is a dress code at this course as well and the management asks that all players and spectators abide by it. For men, a collared shirt with sleeves must be worn. Slacks are preferred, but shorts are allowed as long as they are at least knee length and no shorter.

For women, collared shirts are a must, but the rules are a little more relaxed when it comes to sleeves. Tank tops are not allowed, but a sleeveless shirt may be worn so long as the shoulders are covered. Golf shorts and skirts are allowed, but must not be shorter than mid thigh. Denim is prohibited for both sexes.

Reservations are available but must be made up to 60 days in advance. Please be advised that the course does have a 48 hour cancellation policy. If you fail to cancel within that time period, you will lose your fee.

If it fits your schedule be sure to take advantage of the very reasonable weekday twilight and super twilight rates.

Playing Hints:

The beautiful course is alongside the ocean, but you won’t have to worry too much about water hazards. The main trip up here are the numerous bunkers which can be found on every single hole. Most holes are straightforward, but quite long. The seventh hole is perhaps the toughest on the course. It features a sharp dogleg to the left and there is a nice big bunker in the middle of the fairway. It’s best to keep to the center on this one and go a little short off the tee. From there, you’ll have a clear view of the bunker and the curve.

The eighteenth hole features the one and only water hazard. You’ll be shooting across a large lake to make it to the green, so give it a good one off the tee. Just make sure to avoid the bunkers around the green. With practice, you can easily birdie this hole to save your score.

Course History:

Robert Trent Jones designed this idyllic course and it was later renovated by its current owner, Ty Warner. This is an award winning course that has many distinctions and has been honored by Golf Inc. Magazine. It is easy to see what all the hubbub is about - this is one course that is absolutely magnificent. You’ll feel as though you’ve been transported to a whole different world while you’re here.

What You Need to Know:

Please note that this is a soft spike facility. The course management asks that all players change out their spikes before arriving. In addition, there is a dress code that all players must observe. For the men, collared shirts and slacks are best, but shorts may be worn as long as they are no shorter than mid thigh. For the women, collared shirts are a must, but they can be sleeveless. Shorts and skirt may be worn so long as they are not shorter than mid thigh in length. Denim is strictly prohibited for all players.

The pro shop is terrific and players of all ages will appreciate the club house. Overall, the amenities, coupled with the amazing views make this one of the best courses in the region. This is definitely a course to add to your list of “must play’s.” The practice facility is extremely large and is located in the middle of the course. You’ll have plenty of room to work on your drives and putts (both necessary) before you head out to the course.

Playing Hints:

The holes here are pretty straightforward and you won’t have to deal with too many water hazards or bunkers. The main issue with this course are the hills and the greens. Jones commented that they were some of the best he had ever built, so you’ll definitely want to work on your short game before you arrive.

The key to playing this course successfully is a long drive. You won’t have to worry so much about placement on most of the holes, just try to keep to the center of the fairway. The longer you can drive the better your scores are going to be. However, as mentioned above, don’t forget your short game either. The greens at this course look a sea that has suddenly been frozen in mid wave, and it’s going to take a lot of accuracy to keep your score low.

The rough here is extremely rough and you may feel as though you’re here in the old days when grizzly bears called this their home. You’ll need to really make sure you keep out of there since they can quickly turn a good game into a complete and total nightmare. We do highly recommend renting a cart for this course to make it easier.

Course History:

This is a beautiful municipal course that has been voted one of the best municipal courses in the nation. The value is absolutely unbeatable and the old English links style of play is very popular. It was designed by Chandler Egan in 1932 and quickly became one of the most popular courses in the area. The original course management wanted it to be suitable for players of all skill levels and they certainly achieved that. Novices won’t be intimidated but pros can still enjoy a nice round of golf here.

What You Need to Know:

You can register your tee time by calling ahead at the number listed above or by visiting their website to book online. We recommend stopping by their site to take advantage of their specials. The pro shop here is top notch and overall, from the money, the facilities here are actually quite surprising. You wouldn’t expect this level of service from a municipal course, but they truly exceed all expectations.

Playing Hints:

Most of the holes on the course are very straightforward but you will be dealing with more natural conditions such as some really tough roughs since this is an English style course. However, that only adds to its charm and it is a refreshing break if you are used to playing on more modern courses.

The third hole has a pretty severe dog leg, so you’ll want to aim a little left from the tee to make sure you get a clear shot of the green. The eighth hole can also be tricky in this regard. Once again, hang a little to the left to best this hole.

The sixteenth hole is a long haul but offers a chance to catch up on your score before heading to the final holes that are a lot shorter but a little tougher.

Glen Annie Golf Course, Santa Barbara, CA

Website: http://www.glenanniegolf.com/main/index.php?name=Rates

Course History:

This is a truly stunning course that overlooks the channel islands and the bay. For those who enjoy a scenic course, it is hard to beat this one. The amenities here are absolutely some of the best in the area and this is considered to be one of the best and most challenging championship courses in this region. That said, although the course appeals to pros, novices should still be able to enjoy playing here. It may take a few times to master the course, but considering the view, it is well worth the time spent.

What You Need to Know:

By far, the club house at Glen Annie is one of the best ever built. Visitors come from miles around to enjoy it, even if they don’t play golf. The structure has won numerous architectural awards and the inside is sumptuously furnished. You’ll enjoy dining here after a tough round of golf or maybe stopping by just for fun.

The pro shop is completely stocked and offers gifts for all golfers. Many players like to take advantage of the patio after a round so they can relax and get a better view of their surroundings. This is one course that everyone should try to visit at least once in their lives.

This is a championship course and it is quite hilly, so we recommend taking advantage of the proffered cart. The course is currently running a special where you can get unlimited rounds of golf for a month, with a cart, for less than $300 a month and we highly recommend taking them up on this deal. For the money, this is a great deal.

Playing Hints:

While the course has only two water hazards and a few bunkers sprinkled around, it’s the hills that make this a challenging round of play. There will be times when you won’t even be able to see where you’re aiming, but that is part of the fun of playing here.

Most of the holes are straightforward, but you will be dealing with a dogleg on holes four, ten, sixteen and fourteen. They are reasonably easy as long as you stick to the left on four and to the right on the others. You’ll need to bring your top game for this one, as longer drivers will definitely have an advantage. A long drive off of most tees is essential as the rough is quite tough here and separates each fairway into well trimmed islands surrounded by a sea of grass.

Diablo Grande Ranch Course, Patterson, CA

Course History:

This is a stunning course located in the midst of a winery and resort. There are two main courses here but for this review we’re going to discuss their Ranch Course. This was designed to be a course that players of all skill levels could appreciate and it has certainly lived up to its expectations. Since it’s opening, this course has become an area favorite and is well worth the trip there. It is a bit secluded, so we included some driving directions for you below.

What You Need to Know:

This is a very popular course so we recommend booking your tee time in advance by calling the number listed above. We recommend traditional golf attire, with no denim or cutoffs. There are a few rules governing carts, and the management may require that you keep your cart on the path in specific kinds of weather. They’ll let you know if there are any restrictions for that particular day before you head out to play.

The clubhouse and pro shop are both very top notch and are extremely popular with the locals. Even if you don’t go to play you can still enjoy an incredible meal here and get some great gifts for your friends that do golf. For the money though, this is well worth the trip.

Playing Hints:

This course is home to a famous hole known as “The Mustang” It is 650 yards of sheer effort that will really test your skills. You’ll need to make this one in 5, so definitely work on your drive before you arrive. By the time you’re at the green, you’ll have a magnificent view of Mike’s Peak, and the surrounding area.

This is a course that is well balanced but we definitely do recommend a cart since the elevation can change rapidly. The bunkers and water hazards will give you plenty of ways to test your mettle and your skills.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones, who was given free reign, this is definitely not a course for the faint of heart. This is championship level playing at its best, and although it costs a pretty penny to play here, this is one course that should definitely be included in the list of courses to play before you die. It’s well worth the fee for the experience alone.

What You Need to Know:

This is a course where you will definitely need to be on your best behavior. Traditional golf attire only, no cutoffs or denim are allowed. The pro shop is as you would expect, exceptional and the practice facilities are spectacular. The restaurant offers the best in cuisine and has a wonderful atmosphere for relaxing after your game.

There is a youth golf program at the course, as well as a caddie internship program that has produced some of the finest and most well paid caddies in the state.

Overall, for the money, this is still one of the best courses in California.

Playing Hints:

This is a very long course with over 7,000 yards and some pretty high elevations. Walking is encouraged however, so you won’t need to worry quite as much about the speed of play. There aren’t too many water hazards and although the bunkers are extreme, if your aim is good they should not present too much of a problem. The key to getting through this course is pacing yourself and mastering the art of the accurate long drive.

Most of the holes are very straightforward and there are only a few doglegs that can be surmounted by simply paying attention and aiming in the correct direction. The main challenge is definitely the rolling nature of the course and it is easy to lose sight of where you are aiming if you find yourself at the bottom of one of the main valleys on the course. Patience is also key since this is a course that cannot be mastered with one round of golf.

This incredibly beautiful course is located in a very remote area (we’ve included directions below) but it is well worth the trip. The course is challenging enough for a pro while not being to intimidating for a novice player. First opened in 1961, this became one of the top places to play golf in the area. The course is nestled amidst pine trees and redwoods and features some of the most beautiful lakes in California.
This is a full service course and you can even rent a condo on site if you fall in love with it. The pro shop is very well stocked and there are also tennis and swimming facilities so the whole family can enjoy the outing.

What You Need to Know:

You can book your tee time online or by calling the number listed above. We recommend checking their site often since they frequently post online only specials. Numerous events and tournaments are held throughout the year here and the course is popular. We recommend reserving your tee time well in advance to get the slot you want.

This is one of the few “No soft spike” facilities. Please wear metal spikes while playing this course. There is a dress code and all players are required to wear collared shirts. Please leave the denim and cutoffs at home.

The Ironwood Restaurant at the course features some of the highest rated cuisine in California and it is well worth the trip alone. Overall, this is a very family friendly course that packs high class amenities in a reasonably priced package.

Playing Hints:

This can be a tough course at times, thanks to its rolling terrain. We highly recommend getting a cart to make it a lot easier to traverse the course. If not, you’d better be good at hiking. The holes are all pretty straightforward, but there may be times when it is difficult to see the green. Long drives are necessary if you want to make the Par 65 a reality.

Course History:

This is one of the most popular courses in Napa Valley and with good reason. This is a pleasant nine hole course that is still challenging without sacrificing fun. It became an instant favorite among locals and continues winning accolades to this day.

The course was designed by Casey O’Callaghan and opened in 1998. Since then, it has been redesigned and the play is more exciting than ever. The new design made it appealing for players of all skill levels and the course is known for its incredible greens.

What You Need to Know:

You can book your tee time by calling ahead at the number listed above or by using their online system. Keep an eye on their website since they frequently post specials. Their overall low prices are already hard to beat, and the specials are even better.

The Lakeside Grill offers an incredible lunch with old fashioned favorites like grilled hamburgers. They also have a few more sophisticated items on the menu, but everyone should try the burgers at least once. The pro shop is well stocked and overall, you would think this is a much bigger course than it is.

Playing Hints:

There are a few water hazards on the course, but nothing that should cause too many problems for most players. Unless you have an inordinately bad hook or slice, these should not pose a problem. The bunkers however are a whole other issue. Even though the course is short, you’ll get plenty of chances to work on your short game by trying to avoid these traps.

The first hole has a sharp left to get to the green and can be tricky to play. We recommend going to the right on your drive so that you have a better line to the green. The fourth hole is a short par three that is still challenging thanks to the tricky green here. Eight can be a bit tough due to the rough, so you’ll want to try to get as close to the green as possible with your tee shot. In order to get to the ninth green, you’ll need to stay first towards the middle of the fairway and then go right.

Course History:

This course is part of the historic 2000 acre Roddy Ranch in Antioch, CA. This is a relatively new course that opened to tremendous accolades. It’s already been named one of the best value courses in the bay area and with good reason. If you’re looking for a challenging game of golf that won’t break the bank, look no further. This course is a little off the beaten path, so we included some directions for you below.

What You Need to Know:

Don’t let the prices fool you, this is a very nice course. Everything is top notch and its on the same level as many private clubs when it comes to amenities. You can register your tee time online or by phone. Their website also has a feature to let you pick your time and a special discount, so we recommend visiting before you book.

Lessons are offered every day of the week from the PGA pros on staff. These are also priced very reasonably and there is a special tee that is devoted entirely to practice. Numerous tournaments are held at the course every year and this is a great way to get a feel for the course before you actually head out.

Although the course does not specify a special dress code, we recommend traditional golf attire and soft spikes.

Playing Hints:

The holes are pretty straightforward at first glance, but look a little closer and you’ll see the combination of heavily sloped greens, nasty rough, and sandtraps make for some challenging play. By far, the two hardest holes are the sixteenth hole with its blind green (approach from the right to avoid the bunkers) and the thirteenth hole that also features a blind green surrounded by bunkers. You’ll be playing into the wind on this hole for an even bigger challenge.

The last two holes will give you a chance to salvage your score, especially the par 5 on 18. Just watch out for the remaining bunkers and you should do just fine.

This is a great little nine hole course that opened in 1968. It was designed by Bert Stamps and became an instant local favorite. The incredibly scenic course is perfect for a little getaway and the play is challenging enough for everyone to enjoy.

What You Need to Know:

This course has a great atmosphere. We really recommend attending the numerous tournaments that are held here since you cannot beat the pit barbeque or the fun. The fees are incredibly reasonable and we do recommend booking your tee time in advance since this is a popular course. Lessons are available and the membership packages make it easy to enjoy this course all year round. It is a little tucked away off the beaten path, so we’ve included directions to the course below.

Playing Hints:

This may be a little course, but don’t let it fool you. It’s actually quite tough in spots. Please note that if you are playing 18 holes that the white tees are for the front nine, and the black are for the back nine. The first hole is a gentle dogleg to the left, and you’ll want to keep to the right so you can get a clear shot to the green. This is a pretty long par five given the size of the course, but you can birdie it if you avoid going out of bounds.

The fifth hole is a bit challenging. You’ll want to avoid overhitting on your approach to the green. There is a water hazard behind it and it’s all too easy to end up taking a swim. The ninth hole is the most forgiving and just about any player can birdie this one to salvage their score. Just watch out for the sloping green, it’s a doozy.
