Bing Maloney Golf Course, Sacramento, CA

Website: http://www.bingmaloney.com/

Course History:

This gorgeous par 72 course was designed by MJ McDonaugh, one of Alistair MacKenzie’s peers. The Championship 18 hole course is a delight for players of all skill levels and the executive sized course is also very popular here. This is a course that is definitely unmatched in the bay area.

What You Need to Know:

It is best to wear a collared shirt and slacks here. You’ll want to avoid denim, cutoffs and tank tops since this is a nice facility. Even though it is open to the public, it’s best to err on the side of caution. You can book your tee times online or by phone and it’s a good idea to register ahead since this is a popular course.

The clubhouse is absolutely fantastic and the pro shop is chock full of everything a golfer could ever want. By far, this course is home to some of the best practice facilities in the area. This is definitely a course that every golfer in the area should try at least once.

Playing Hints:

We’ll focus on the Championship Course for our playing hints. It is a course that is going to require a little bit of time to master, but you’re pretty much guaranteed a very fun time doing it.

Although this course does not have many water hazards, you are going to want to watch out for the bunkers. They line the fairways for most holes and nearly every green has at least one. The tenth hole offers a challenging dog leg to the left where the right side of the fairway is lined with bunkers. You’re going to want to go a little left here to avoid getting into trouble.

The greens on this course tend to slope quite a bit and the fairways are quite narrow. Accuracy is your best bet if you want to master this one.

Haggin Oak Golf Course, Sacramento, CA

Haggin Oaks Golf Course is located in: Sacramento, CA

Phone: 916-481-GOLF

Website: http://www.hagginoaks.com/

Course History:

Haggin Oaks is known as the one of the oldest and most respected courses in the Bay Area. Numerous PGA events have been held here since it opened in 1932 and it has seen numerous champions find their way to victory. The two courses are well appointed and cared for and for the money, this is definitely one of the best values in the region.

What You Need to Know:

You can register your tee time online or by calling ahead to the phone number listed above. Although they don’t specifically state that there is a dress code, you are best served by wearing a collared shirt and trousers. This is a very traditional course, and you’ll need to make sure that you observe their rules, replace your divots and keep your playing speed up.

Playing Hints:

Although there are two courses at this location, we’re going to focus on the 18 hole Alistair McKenzie course for this review. The nine hole course is terrific if you’re looking for a quick but challenging game. For the 18 holes, you really won’t have to deal with many water hazards. There is one lake but it is far enough away from the fairways that it shouldn’t pose any problems for anyone. The first five holes are very straightforward, but be prepared for the severe dog leg on the sixth hole. You’ll want to go left and then right with your second shot.

The remainder of the holes are very straightforward and although they are a little long, most players should not have any difficulty mastering them.

Sharp Park Golf Course is located in: Pacifica, CA

Phone: 1-415-750-4653

Website: http://www.sharpparkgc.com

Course History:

This course was designed by the famed Alistair McKenzie and quickly grew to be a favorite among locals and visitors. With just the right amount of difficulty and some gorgeous scenery, this is a very relaxing place to play golf and have a lot of fun. Visitors appreciate how well the course is kept up and it’s the perfect spot to just get away from it all for a few hours. The course was opened in 1932, but has undergone some changes since then. The major issue was the destruction of several holes after storms in the 1930’s and its position on the coast does leave it vulnerable to some problems. However, they have managed to rebuild and keep it going strong since then. If you enjoy playing golf in the elements, this is definitely a course to try.

What You Need to Know:

You can register your tee time by calling the number provided. Please keep in mind that if you become a member of the club you can save on green fees. Club membership is open to all and we’ve included extra information about costs below. Tournaments are frequently held here and it’s a great destination for the whole family. The clubhouse has their menu online and you can’t beat it for value and taste. The pro shop is completely stocked with all the latest brands and lessons are also available at the course.

Playing Hints:

Most of the holes are pretty straightforward, which is a good thing given that the course is on the coast. You will need to deal with wind at times, so try to schedule your round when winds are at their lowest. Watch out for the fifth hole, it appears to be an easy par three, but you’re going to need some skill to get par here. The thirteenth hole is a great par five that will give you plenty of opportunities to birdie and get your score back up.
