Course History:

This course first opened in 1999 and is considered to be one of the most ecologically friendly courses in the area. It is known to locals as the public course with private amenities and a round here is like a mini vacation. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful and you’ll enjoy a nice, peaceful round of golf.

What You Need to Know:

Because 40 acres of the 170 acre compound is set aside for ecology purposes, the course asks that you respect this area and not enter. They do enforce a pace of play rule, so you’ll need to keep things moving along. This is the main reason that the course does not allow five-somes.

Although the course has some challenging elements, it is well suited to players of all skill levels. The aforementioned amenities include a well stocked pro shop, and the Wildhorse Grill where you can find some of the best food in the entire region. They offer lunch and breakfast every day and are also a favorite for catering special events.

You can book your tee time by calling the number above, but be sure to check back to their site from time to time as they do post specials on a frequent basis.

Playing Hints:

This is a course that has some serious water hazards on nearly every hole, but if you keep to the center of the fairways you should be fine in most cases. However that won’t be easy since the fairways are incredibly narrow. You’ll really want to work on your accuracy here to get the best results.

The fourth hole looks easy enough, but watch out for the creek that bisects the fairway and the green. You’ll want to try to get over it with your first shot if possible. If not, take the easy way out and use an iron off the tee and your seven or nine iron to get to the green. The back nine plays much the same way with numerous water obstacles, but you’ll also be dealing with some serious doglegs here, so save up your energy!

San Diego Golf Academy — Go to Golf College For a Golf Career

Golf Instructor If the sport of golf is your passion in life, you need to consider attending the San Diego Golf Academy.  Through programs of study at the San Diego Golf Academy (SDGA), you will gain both practical experience and a thorough understanding of the golf business.  Graduates of SDGA can turn their love of golf into life-long careers.

San Diego Golf Academy has been in operation for over 30 years.  SDGA placement directors find a great majority of their over 6000 graduates in a golf career, procuring jobs in the golf industry.  SDGA even has a unique online program called GolFutures.  This is a nationwide resource for jobs in the golf industry which SDGA has been operating since 1991.  So, not only do graduates have access to excellent career counseling, but alumni can also utilize GolFutures as they advance their careers in the golf industry.

While the SDGA does not guarantee job placement for graduates, the golf college does have an incredibly high job placement rate.  Job counselors assist graduates in writing resumes and preparing for interviews.  Faculty members at SDGA are also willing to serve as references for students and to write recommendations to help students obtain jobs.   And, they are successful in finding jobs in the golf industry for nearly 90% of their graduates within 6 months of graduation.

There are four campus locations of the SDGA.  These are located in California, Arizona, Florida, and South Carolina.  Tuition is about $28,000.  But, financial aid is available for students, just as it is for other colleges and schools.  The SDGA Financial Aid office can assist students in applying for financial assistance.  Students may be eligible for grants and loans.

Students at SDGA major in Golf Complex Operations & Management.  But, students can opt to focus their studies on either the Golf Professional courses or the Golf Management courses-or, they can have a dual emphasis.  No matter what area of focus a student chooses, the program is still the same in length.  Students graduate after 2 years, or 16 consecutive months, with an Associate Degree.

Unlike many golf schools, SDGA doesn’t stop at offering students the opportunity to earn an Associates Degree.   Students can continue their education through a partnership SDGA has formed with Virginia College.  Through this program, students can earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Golf Course Management within 2 years.  And, what’s great about this program is that students can earn this degree while they are working in the golf industry because the Virginia College program is online.

SDGA is a fully accredited college by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS).  This means that the SDGA is authorized to award Associate Degrees and that the degrees given by the SDGA will be nationally recognized as authentic.

Beginning a career in the golf industry is ideal for anyone who has a strong love of the sport.  And attending the San Diego Golf Academy is the perfect way to get the necessary education to get hired.  SDGA has everything a person needs-and more.

River Oaks Golf Course, Nicolaus, CA

River Oaks Golf Course is located in: Nicolaus, CA

Phone: 916.488.4653

Website: http://www.riveroaksgolfclub.net

Course History:

The course is located on the historic Nicolaus Ranch that dates back to the early 1800’s. It was formerly known as the Rio La Paz Course but was recently renamed. It is a favorite among locals and everyone appreciates how well the course is kept and the friendly atmosphere. For a course of this quality the rates are surprisingly low.

With more than 6500 yards, this par 71 course offers a terrific challenge for players of all skill levels and a very enjoyable round of golf. It is very quiet here and retains much of the tranquility that drew the initial settlers to this area. It is a little tucked away from the beaten path so we have included directions for you below.

What You Need to Know:

This is a terrific course that is meant for those who truly love the game of golf. You won’t get a lot of frills, just some good old fashioned links. There are numerous water hazards to avoid, which we’ll get into in the next section.

Playing Hints:

Accuracy is definitely the key to mastering this course. You’re going to want to stay as close to the middle of the fairways as you can since the rough can be quite challenging. The first hole is easy enough, but the bunkers on the second hole can throw anyone off. Try to go a little to the left to avoid these.

The fourth hole is a very long par five that is nearly impossible to eagle unless you know what you’re doing. The course states that even the best drivers typically have another 240 yards to go before they get to the green. You’ll want to give this shot everything you’ve got. The water hazards to watch out for on the rest of the front nine include a very tricky fifth, sixth and seventh hole.

The twelfth hole is incredibly challenging and may take a few tries just to get around the water hazard that surrounds the green. Do your best to clear your second shot to avoid losing one here. The rest of the course is pretty straightforward and you should have plenty of opportunities to make up some shots on the seventeenth and eighteenth holes.

Haggin Oak Golf Course, Sacramento, CA

Haggin Oaks Golf Course is located in: Sacramento, CA

Phone: 916-481-GOLF

Website: http://www.hagginoaks.com/

Course History:

Haggin Oaks is known as the one of the oldest and most respected courses in the Bay Area. Numerous PGA events have been held here since it opened in 1932 and it has seen numerous champions find their way to victory. The two courses are well appointed and cared for and for the money, this is definitely one of the best values in the region.

What You Need to Know:

You can register your tee time online or by calling ahead to the phone number listed above. Although they don’t specifically state that there is a dress code, you are best served by wearing a collared shirt and trousers. This is a very traditional course, and you’ll need to make sure that you observe their rules, replace your divots and keep your playing speed up.

Playing Hints:

Although there are two courses at this location, we’re going to focus on the 18 hole Alistair McKenzie course for this review. The nine hole course is terrific if you’re looking for a quick but challenging game. For the 18 holes, you really won’t have to deal with many water hazards. There is one lake but it is far enough away from the fairways that it shouldn’t pose any problems for anyone. The first five holes are very straightforward, but be prepared for the severe dog leg on the sixth hole. You’ll want to go left and then right with your second shot.

The remainder of the holes are very straightforward and although they are a little long, most players should not have any difficulty mastering them.

Green Tree Golf Course, Vacaville, CA

Green Tree Golf Course is located in: Vacaville, CA

Phone: (707)448-1420

Website: http://www.greentreegolfcourse.com

Course History:

Green Tree Golf Course was first built in 1962, but has since undergone significant renovations. There are now two main courses, the Championship Course which is a full 18 holes and the Executive 9 Hole Course. This is a very traditional course in the best sense of the word and offers a challenging round of golf that isn’t too intimidating for novice players but still more than enough fun for professionals.

With just over 6300 yards, this Par 71 course features Bentgrass/Poa greens and gorgeous tree lined fairways. It’s considered one of the best courses in the area and with good reason.

What You Need to Know:

The club offers email specials on a regular basis and has numerous incentives on their website for players. You can call ahead to reserve your tee-time by using the number listed above. While they have no strict dress code, it’s best to stick with regular golf attire and a collared shirt.

The pro shop is very well stocked and they also offer lessons and fittings. We’ve included more information about that below. The course grill has some of the best food in the area and specializes in delicious burgers that are truly out of this world.

Playing Hints:

The main thing to remember with this course is accuracy. You’ll be dealing with several water hazards. The first hole is a prime example of this and you’ll need scuba gear if you take a wrong shot. Try to keep as close to the center of the fairway as possible.

The fourth hole has a water hazard right before the green. Since it’s a short par three, you’ll either want to really power it off the tee or hit a short shot off the tee and iron over. The eighth hole features a gentle dog leg to the right and yet another water hazard so you may want to go a little left on this one to avoid losing a shot.

Empire Ranch Golf Club is located in: Folsom, CA

Phone: 916-817-8100

Website: http://www.empireranchgolfclub.com

Course History:

This course is very well maintained and offers a beautiful round of golf that is quiet and undisturbed. Serious players love this course since they can really concentrate on their game. With nearly 6700 yards, this Par 71 course is more than challenging but still fun for players of all skill levels. The main problem area for most players are the marshes, which we’ll get into below.

What You Need to Know:

This is a friendly course but there are some rules that you will need to follow. It’s best to wear soft spikes and appropriate golf attire, such as slacks and a collared shirt. Their website contains the entire document of their house rules and we recommend reading that before you visit the course.

The pro shop is incredibly well stocked and offers a wide selection of apparel and equipment. It’s a great place to go gift shopping for other golfers as well. Club fittings are offered and you can also get lessons at this course. The driving range opens early and they have some top notch practice facilities.

The club house is open from 6am to 8am and offers meals throughout the day. They also provide special event catering. The course is a favorite destination for many events and tournaments throughout the year, so you may want to call ahead to see what’s going on ahead of time. You can book your tee time by calling the number listed above. The course is also the home for the popular Empire Ranch Men’s Golf Club.

Playing Hints:

This is a fairly straightforward course, but due to the marshes, you’re going to want to be as accurate as possible. It’s really a nightmare to get stuck in one, so do all that you can to stay towards the center of the fairway. The first hole is an easy par four, but the second is a par three that is actually quite challenging.

You’ll want to save up your energy for the par 5 seventh hole since this one is a real killer. The back nine is just as challenging, but you’ll have a nice par three at the end where you can easily birdie if you get your tee shot right.

Dark Horse Golf Club, Auburn, CA

Dark Horse Golf Club is located in: Auburn, CA

Phone: 530-269-7900

Website: http://www.darkhorsegolf.com

Course History:

This course was designed by Keith Foster and is considered to be one of the more unique courses in the area. This is not a course you’ll only want to play once. After you finish your first round, chances are, you’ll be coming back again and again.

Since it opened in 2002, it has been showered with accolades. Golf Magazine named it in the top ten Courses You Can Play while Golf Digest stated it was one of the most affordable public courses in the area. The 7000 yard Par 72 course was designed with the elements in mind and they worked very hard to leave the natural beauty of the location in place. The result is a visually stunning course that is challenging and fun to play.

What You Need to Know:

This course does have a dress code and they ask that you wear a collared shirt. They do however allow dress denim, but no cutoffs please. No alcohol or coolers are allowed on the course. The club house does serve plenty of food and drink so you can stock up there.

You can register your tee time up to thirty days in advance by calling the number listed above. You can also book your tee time using their online registration system. This course is home to numerous events throughout the year, so it is a good idea to check with the course to make sure it is available.

The practice facilities are incredible here and very popular. The pro shop has all the latest gear and apparel and lessons are also available. This is definitely a course that you should make time to visit.

Playing Hints:

The holes here are pretty straightforward and well suited to both professionals and novices. Water hazards are kept to a minimum and include a creek that goes through several holes. However, it is not terribly wide so it does not pose a problem for most players. The bunkers however are another matter entirely. Choose your approach shot well or you could end up deeply in the hole.

The rough is incredibly rough on this course so you’re going to want to really work on your accuracy. Try to stay as close to the center of the fairways as possible, but watch out for the trees. They can throw off even the best players.

The eighth hole is possibly one of the most challenging on the course. You’ll be hopping over the rough to get to each section of the fairway and another patch separates the green. Do your best to get a really long drive off the tee and then use your nine iron to make it on to the green from there.

 Cordova Golf Course, Sacramento, CA

Website: http://www.cordovagc.com

Course History:

This course was first built in 1958 and became very popular due to its low rates and terrific play. They are very friendly to players of all skill levels and the prices really are incredibly reasonable for an 18 hole course. The pro shop is completely stocked the grill has some of the best food in the area.

What You Need to Know:

There are a few rules that you’ll need to know before you play here. First, it’s best to wear a collared shirt and please keep in mind that this is a soft spike course. Change out your metal spikes before arriving. They do not allow ice chests or any alcoholic beverages and they ask that all players respect the course. Course marshals frequently patrol the area, so it’s best to keep these rules in mind.

In addition, they also ask that only licensed drivers operate the golf carts. All players must have their own set of clubs. If you don’t have your own set, you can rent one from the pro shop. Tee times can be reserved by calling the number listed above. Check out their website for their frequent specials if you want to save even more money.

Playing Hints:

This is a nice straightforward course that is suitable for most players. Pros will find it challenging enough while novices won’t be too intimidated. The second hole is a bit tricky, but you can make up any lost ground on the short par three on the next hole. Most players are able to birdie this hole if they hit their tee shot right. The sixth hole is a challenging par five but if you keep to the center of the fairway and avoid the rough you should be ok. The last two holes are par threes that look easy, but make sure you hit your shots just hard enough to avoid going over the greens.

Bethel Island Golf Course is located in: Bethel Island, CA

Phone: (925) 684-2654

Website: http://www.bethelislandgolf.com

Course History:

Bob Baldock designed this incredible course with undulating fairways that provide more than enough of a challenge for most players. It is a peaceful course and offers a great place to get away from it all. The course is thought of as one of the best draining in the area and it is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. The holes play long, so you may want to take a cart to avoid getting too tired out.

What You Need to Know:

This course is the site of the upcoming ESPN event for The Exceptional Driver and many other events are held here throughout the year. The long fairways make this an ideal location for these kinds of competitions and they are very fun to attend. If you plan to play in one, take advantage of their incredible practice facilities where you can work on your driving and your short game as well as putting on their state of the art putting green.

The course offers a Men’s Club for a very low rate which allows you to play in tournaments and get discounts on tee times here and at other popular courses. If you are a frequent golfer, we really recommend this since it is so inexpensive. The club house here is top notch and the pro shop is well stocked with everything you could ever need.

You can book your tee time online or by calling the number listed above. Check their website often as they run specials quite frequently.

Playing Hints:

Your best bet to mastering this course is to really work on your drive. The fairways are actually quite wide, so you have a little wiggle room there. However, most of the holes are quite long, so you can easily ruin your score if you can’t get enough distance off the tee.

Numerous water hazards make things a little more complicated and the trees are an issue for most players. You’ll want to try to play as close to the center of the fairway as you can on most holes after your first shot. Watch out for the eighth hole, it’s a deceptively easy par 3 that is a real killer.

You’ll also want to pay special attention to the seventeenth hole. It’s a long par five, but with a really good drive, you can eagle it or at the very least get a birdie to salvage your score.
