Course History:

Stone Tree Golf Club was opened in 2000 and was designed by Johnny Miller, Sandy Tatum, Jim Summers and Fredrick C. Bliss, ASGCA. The Par 72 course stretches out over more than 6800 yards and has a rating of 72.7. The slope rating is 137 on rye grass. The scenery around the course is absolutely breathtaking and this is considered to be one of the best courses in Northern California.

What You Need to Know:

Please note that this course does have a dress code. They ask that players wear collared shirts and if shorts must be worn, they must reach the knee. No denim or cutoffs are allowed on the course. In addition, this is a soft spike only course, please remove metal spikes before you arrive.

Pace of play is observed with 15 minutes allotted per hole. In addition, no offsite beverages or food may be brought onto the course. The on site Black Pointe bar and grill is open every day for breakfast through dinner and the pro shop has all the latest gear and apparel.

Playing Hints:

The first hole is very straightforward and is a great warm up for what is to come. By the time you get to the first par five at hole six, you’ll be ready for the challenge of water hazards and bunkers that are waiting to mess up your game. Try to keep to the center of the fairway as much as you can to get the best score on this hole.

Hole eleven features not only a dogleg but also water hazards and bunkers that can really trip you up. Your best bet is to play it long on the first shot and then use your iron to get a better approach shot once you get to the water hazard.

The fourteenth hole is pretty easy until you get to the green. Aim carefully, as it is quite common to overshoot this one and get trapped in the really nasty rough.

The eighteenth hole has a creek, another water hazard and a bunker, as well as a great dogleg, making it a tough hole to finish with. However, with practice you can birdie this hole, provided you use the right combination of clubs and careful aim.

Spring Valley Golf Course

Course is located in: Milpitas, CA

Phone: (408) 262-1722

Spring Valley Golf Course Spring Valley Golf
Website: http://www.springvalleygolfcourse.com

Course History:

This course first opened in 1965 and is a Par 70 stretching out over more than 6200 yards. The rating for the course is 68.8 and the slope rating is 112 on Bermuda grass. The course is currently being managed by Rick Jetter. The course is bordered by parks and offers a very serene environment. The combination of this scenery with great prices has made this course a favorite among locals and visitors alike.

What You Need to Know:

The driving range has 22 bays and offers a great place to work on your skills. The on site pros are very helpful and lessons are available. This is a fun course to play and offers enough of a challenge for players of all skill levels while not falling into being intimidating. You can get a complete walk through of the course on their website as well as helpful tips on how to approach each hole. The course also has a great sand bunker to practice your chip shots as well as a 25 yard chipping area.

The course Grill offers a wide variety of food and you can access their menus online. It is also available for catering and special events and is a local favorite, even among non golfers. They serve breakfast and lunch and open at 7am on most days. In addition, the course also features a centrally located snack bar if you get hungry on the course.

Playing Hints:

Right off the bat, the first hole is a difficult par four. Take careful aim and make sure to really power this one off of the tee. Try to stay as close as possible to the middle of the fairway for the best results.

A short par three awaits you on the second hole, but it’s a lot harder than it looks. Try to get on the green with your first shot to avoid getting trapped in the rough. It’s pretty smooth sailing then until you reach hole five, where things get a little more complicated. Use the right combination of clubs for your style and try to avoid getting tripped up by the hazards.

The back nine are even more complex holes and since you’ve had a good warm up by this point you should be ready. The tenth hole is a killer but can be mastered with a few practice rounds. The twelfth hole is challenging for just about any player, but save your strength for the fifteenth hole which is a difficult par four. You’re almost done and there’s a nice short par three awaiting you. Again, try to iron in to get to the green for a birdie shot.

The eighteenth hole is a great place to try to get your score back up after this difficult course. It may take a few tries, but once you get the hang of Spring Valley, you’ll be doing just fine.

Santa Teresa Golf Club

Santa Teresa Golf ClubSanta Teresa Golf Club is located in San Jose, CA

Phone: 408-225-2650

Website: http://www.santateresagolf.com

Course History:

There are two courses, one is an 18 hole Par 71 and the second is known as “Shorty” and is an executive course with par 3 holes. Which ever course you pick to play, you’re sure to enjoy the challenge. The 18 hole course is just difficult enough to be challenging to professional players while not intimidating beginners.

What You Need to Know:

Please note the following policies that have been instituted by the course management:

Santa Teresa Golf Club is a public course and may be enjoyed by all.

Each person may make one tee time reservation per phone call.

Green fees are not refundable.

Green fees may be paid for with cash, check or credit card.

Coolers are not allowed on the golf course.

The course has an online tee time reservation service or you can call to place your registration. Please note that tee times can be registered up to two weeks in advance. Lessons are available on the course from the on-site pros and can be purchased right from their website.

The pro shop is also online and offers all of the latest apparel and gear from the main brands. The course also has a club house with some terrific food. You can enjoy your meal while overlooking the scenic course.

Tournaments are often hosted at the course and are a favorite with locals. This is considered to be one of the truly fun courses to play in the entire Bay Area and it has a great reputation. If you’ve never played here, catching a tournament is a great way to get started.

Playing Hints:

The front nine are pretty flat, but don’t let this trick you into thinking the course is easy. The hazards and trees make it more than complicated to keep on the right track. Aim is certainly the key to finishing this course well as well as good club selection. Most of the shots from the tees will be pretty straight, so focus on using your driver in most situations and giving it all you’ve got.

Hole eleven is quite a challenge with a large bunker built right into the fairway. Make sure you give your ball just enough power to get over this hazard. Hole twelve is a deceptively easy par four, but the curve adds to the complexity of getting a birdie here.

Hole sixteen is a short par three, but watch out for the bunkers around the green. Try to iron your way in for the best lie. The dogleg on the eighteenth hole makes for quite a challenge, but at least you’re almost done at this point in your game.

Ranch Solano Golf Course
Website: http://www.fairfieldgolf.com

Course History:

Rancho Solano is one of the two best courses in Fairfield, CA. It features a Par 72 course stretched out over more than 6,000 yards of playable space. It was designed by Gary Roger Baird and opened in 1990.

What You Need to Know:

The course features an online registration system for tee-times and also offers numerous lessons and other features. The driving range is top notch and features mats for a hitting surface as well as a special sand bunker to help you work on your chip shots. You’ll also find a putting green by the club house.

Playing Hints:

Eight holes on this course feature water hazards, making it a bit tricky at times. They range from running alongside the fairway on holes one through five, to cutting off your path to the green by holes eleven and twelve. With the right clubs and adjustments though, you should be able to get past these hazards without many problems.

The real killer hole on the course is definitely hole number nine. You’ll be dealing with bunkers all along the fairway and it’s a real challenge to get in between them and stay in the fairway. A slight curve adds more to the challenge, making this a fun hole to master.

The seventeenth green is ringed by six bunkers so approach this one carefully. You may want to go a little short on your approach so you can use your pitching wedge to get on the green with a little more accuracy. Again, the right selection of clubs is absolutely key to mastering this course.

Course History:

Pleasanton Golf Course is a fun course that is open to the public and offers a great way to spend an afternoon. The prices are very reasonable and the on staff pros are incredibly helpful. Numerous specials are run throughout the year to make it easier to enjoy the course. There are three par four holes and 1500 yards of playable space. Although this is a little course, it’s a great little diversion.

What You Need to Know:

Tee times can be reserved up to one week in advance and must be reserved using their phone system. The course does not have an online tee time service at this time.

Playing Hints:

This nine hole course has been described as being a bit “funky” and with good reason. Although it’s a short course, there are plenty of challenges and it can be quite fun to try and master this one. There’s something for all players to learn here and a chance to work on not only your long shots but your short game as well.

The first hole is a nice dog leg with a water hazard to the left and two bunkers on either side of the green. Use care to stay in the center of the fairway here. You’ll be going great when you hit hole three, which is a bit of a killer. Keep going though and you’ll get to even more challenging holes.

This course is in the center of a racehorse track, so many people prefer to schedule their game while the horses are running. Numerous events are also held at the fairgrounds and keep your play interesting. This course is so popular that many people decide to play a full eighteen rounds instead of just the regular nine. It’s challenging enough to keep you focused and the extra practice can’t hurt at figuring out how to master this fun but sometimes difficult little course.

With the low rates though, it’s easy to spend a few hours working on your game and enjoying all the sites in the area.

Course History:

The course was designed in 1959 by William F. Bell. The course underwent reconstruction and renovation in 2006 which is currently being completed. The course is over 6200 yards in length and is currently a Par 71.

The rating for Peacock Gap is 70 and the largest green is 7,640 square feet. Numerous changes were made to the course during the reconstruction, such as refreshing the greens and adding new features. You can get a complete list of the changes on their website.

Numerous videos are available on their site to give you a first hand glimpse of the course. They also feature some of their pros with some great tips. On a fun note, the course has a resident “Goose Dog” named Hannah that keeps the course clear of geese.

What You Need to Know:

The course management has instituted the following codes of conduct that must be observed by all players:

“To provide our members and guests a proper golf environment, Peacock Gap Country Club is introducing a dress code for all golfers, whether  playing or practicing.

The following items are restricted: T-shirts, Denim, Sweat Pants, Gym  shorts, Metal spikes, Tank tops, Fatigues, and Spandex.”

Tournaments are frequently held on site and the course offers numerous amenities. Whether you are booking your own tournament or looking forward to attending one at the club in the future, you are sure to be taken care of well. We’ve included information below for those who would like to learn more about this option.

Lessons are available on site from their pros, and you can email them directly using the information we included at the end of this review. The state of the art practice facility is terrific and offers plenty of opportunities to hone your game or just have a little fun.

To register your tee time, please call ahead. The course does not offer an online tee time reservation service at this time.

Playing Hints:

The second hole looks easy, but you’re really going to need to watch where you put your shot here. It needs to be placed a little left of center if you want to have an easy shot to the green.

Hole number seven is a short par four, but don’t let this fool you. You’ll still need to use a good bit of strategy and really focus on where you place your ball if you want to birdie here.

The eleventh hole is incredibly narrow, so once again, careful aim is the key to success. This course is truly one for those who need to practice setting their ball just perfectly on the fairway.

Course History:

This is the oldest golf course west of the Mississippi River and was opened in 1895. It first started out as a nine hole course and was later expanded. Numerous tournaments are played every year at this amazingly beautiful and historically rich course. During World War II the army took over the course and to this day you can still see some of their bunkers.

What You Need to Know:

The course does have a cancellation policy for tee-times. You must give them 24 hours notice or you will be charged the full green fee. They do have a dress code and all players must wear collared shirts. Please note that tank tops are not allowed and the course also has a soft spike policy. In addition, no glass containers are allowed on the course at any time.

All golfers must have their own clubs. Rentals are available. Absolutely no spectators are allowed on the course at any time. Tee times can be booked online or by calling ahead and are available up to 14 days in advance.

The Mare Island Café is open for all meals, including breakfast. You can get their menu from the website. Beer and liquor are served at the clubhouse.

Playing Hints:

The first four holes are pretty straightforward, but the only par five, hole five can be a bit more difficult. It’s best to try to power the ball as far as possible and then use a 3 or 5 wood to get on the green from there.

The eighth hole is definitely tricky and is cut in half by a large lake. Again, your best bet is to use your driver to get over it in one shot and then iron out the rest of the hole.

Although the fifteenth hole looks like an easy par three, you’ll have to be especially careful to avoid the bunkers on either side of the green.

Playing Hints:

The second hole is a great par five that is easy enough to eagle if you are a pro, or birdie if you are a novice. The seventh hole is deceptively easy, but you’ll need to work to make par here. The eighth hole is quite a challenge at a long par five, but if you can power it right off the tee you have a good chance to make birdie.

The twelfth hole is a real challenge as well, no matter what level of player you may be. It doesn’t get much easier either. Save up your strength for the long par five on the eighteenth hole, this is a great place to make up lost ground on your score.

Indian Valley Golf Course

Indian Valley Golf CourseIndian Valley Golf Course is located in: Novato, CA

Phone: (415) 897-1118

Website: http://www.ivgc.com

Course History:

The course opened in 2004 and was designed by by Robert Nyberg/(R) and Kevin Ramsey. With nearly 6500 yards of play, this Par 72 course is challenging for professionals while still being friendly to beginners. The slope rating is 124 on bluegrass and the course is rated at 70.4.

What You Need to Know:

Although the course does not state whether they have a dress code, it is best to wear a collared shirt and avoid denim. Likewise, the use of soft spikes is recommended.

You can book your tee time by calling the course in advance or by using their online reservation system.

The 19th hole Bar and Grill is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. They serve breakfast and lunch every day. The full menu is available on their website.

Playing Hints:

The first hole is a great warmup before you get to the water challenge on hole two. Most players shouldn’t have a problem powering past this hazard at the tee, but it’s recommended to use your long wood for the best results.

The same hazard crosses hole three, so keep this mind while teeing off. Hole number six is a complicated mix up of bunkers and slopes, so use caution while approaching the green. You may want to risk par-ing this hole instead of getting stuck in the bunkers.

The eleventh hole features two tricky water hazards. Your best bet is to try to land between the two and then use a long iron to get to the green. Otherwise, it may be too complicated to try to get over one and not the other.

The fifteenth hole also offers a great challenge with plenty of bunkers ringing the green. Use caution and try your nine iron or a pitching wedge for the best results. A water hazard runs along side the seventeenth hole, but it is not too difficult. Although eighteen looks deceptively easy, the dogleg can throw off even the best players.

Harding Park Golf Club

Harding Park Golf ClubHarding Park Golf Club is located in: San Francisco, CA

Phone:  (415)750-GOLF

Website: http://www.harding-park.com

Course History:

This is a municipal golf course that was opened in 1925. Since then, it has been one of the most popular courses in the area. With a par 72 and more than 6,400 yards of playing space it is suitable both for beginners and professionals. The course was designed by Chris Gray.  A dramatic redesign ending in 2005 with the hosting of the World Golf Championships.

What You Need to Know:

Harding Park offers the ability to reserve your tee time up to thirty days in advance. They have an automated system to reserve your time which is available at the phone number above. If you are not a resident, the regular rate will apply, however residents are given a discount if they produce a valid ID.

Golf lessons are offered at the course from several pros. This course will be the location for the President’s Cup in 2009. Please visit their website for more information about this special event.

The clubhouse restaurant is incredible and serves everything from prime rib to special buffet style dinners. They begin serving breakfast at 7am and full menus can be downloaded from their website. The clubhouse is also available for special event catering.

Playing Hints:

Although the first hole starts off easy enough, by the second hole you’ll be ready for a challenge. With fairway bunkers and a difficult approach, you’ll want to do all you can to really power that first shot past these hazards.

The sixth hole is by far the hardest to master and will take every bit of strength and strategy to get it done. It is possible to birdie this hole if you take the right approach. Don’t be fooled by the appearance of the green, this one is definitely deceptive.

Hole twelve is a par five that will give you a chance to make up for the more difficult holes you’ve already passed. With the right combination of clubs you can eagle this one or at the very least, birdie it.

Hole seventeen looks really easy, and at a par three, you wouldn’t think it would be that hard. Just watch out for the prevailing winds which can really wreak havoc on your game.

The last hole is their signature hole and is a true test of your mettle. The only way to get around the dogleg is to risk the bunker, so aim carefully and watch out for the slope ahead of the green.
