The Olympic Club Course Changes
Monday morning at the Olympic club found a fog delay that pushed the start of play back from 7am all the way until 11am. A good friend of mine is a life long Olympian and was in charge of the marshals for the Amateur. During the wait he gave me a tour of both course via cart. Showing off the various changes and enhancements that the USGA had made.
The most obvious change was the addition of length of 3, 5, and 12 of Lake. It was more than just added length, they also change the angle through the shoot trees and to the fairway. Most dramatically on 12 where the tee shot MUST now be faded in order to have any chance at the green. There may have been other changes, but those holes seemed the most noticeable.
One other thing I would point out… I would have gladly played in the fog. It wasn’t bad except on a few holes (#1 on both Lake and Ocean were near the worst). I think the British Amateur would have played in the weather. Given the size of the tournament I understand the decision. Equitable play for all participants.
