Golf Course Ladder -- Golf Clubs, Golf Courses, and Golfing

US Amateur Golf Championship at The Olympic Club

This year (2007) the US Amateur was held at The Olympic Club.  The format of the tournament is a 2 day stroke play event (medal round) where the top 64 advance to match play.  During the 2 day stroke event they use 2 courses.  The Olympic Club happens to have 2 world class course.  The Lake Course is in the top 10 in the World and The Ocean Course is in the top 20 in California.

I had the opportunity to volunteer as a marshal during the medal play.  What a treat to both help a great event, see all of those great golfers, and hang around at a world class facility.

I was on the 4th hole of Lake (the number 1 handicap for the members.)

Over the next several days I will be telling of my experiences during the 2007 US Amateur.

Self Adjusting Match Play with Junk

I have been playing a gambling match with my friends when I am just playing with one other person.  It is a variant of Match Play with Junk.  It is self adjusting match play with junk.

Before the self adjusting part let me lay out the rule of the basic game the way I play it.  Match play is fairly straight forward.  Each hole is worth one point no carry over.  Junk is an extra point for greenies (on in regulation with a 2 putt or better validation), sandies (in a bunker end hole with a par or better), birdies (double the holes value), and eagles (quadruple the holes value.)

The self adjusting part of the game is to setup and autopress when 3 down.  The press adds a point to the hole’s value, but not the junk.  When a player presses he receives an additional 2 stokes.

When I play this game I will give or take any amount of strokes my opponent fells is correct.

Thoughts?

Not Enough Golf

First Too Much Golf and now not enough golf.  Since my 3 days in a row I have yet to play again.  Now that I am on vacation for a family emergency it is looking like I won’t get to play again for at least another couple of weeks.

There goes any touch I had developed lately.  I am going to fill in posts in the coming days with golf course review posts.  I have played a large number of courses and some fairly regularly.  I am also going to write a post about a 2 man gambling golf game that I have been playing a bit lately.

The best thing about taking a little break from golf is that you forget your bad habits.  The problem is you also forget any good habits.  (I don’t have many good habits so I am ok).
